Here are some great tips for first time coaches from Coerver Co Founder Alf Galustian

If you are new to world of soccer coaching and the challenge feels daunting then here’s some great advice on some of the most common mistakes and the steps required to avoid them.

1. Planning

Choose drills that are fun. All kids need to have fun otherwise you will loose their attention quickly. If you choose drills that are fun then the players will focus allowing you the coach to concentrate on teaching.

2. Over-coaching

Over-coaching means talking too much or in the wrong place. Trying to do too many drills or moving on too quickly. Don’t try to put too much into each session. You will often find that drills for longer than intended. A good idea would be to have a buffer in place. For example an extension of a drill that can be skipped or included depending on wether or not the session is running to schedule.

3. Focus

Finally focus. Remember that you are a development/youth level coach. It is therefore key that the players are developing each session. Even if the team isn’t winning its important that the players can identify progress in their game and overall ability.

Here are three great 3 tips for keeping the ball from the opposition like Spanish international and Manchester City midfielder David Silva.

Follow these 3 great tips to help you play like a pro! Playing against a strong opposition you may find that there are no sensible passing options. In these situations defenders will pressure the ball so it is vital to stay in possession to allow team mates to find space and passing options. David Silva is one of the best players at this and often makes chances using the following techniques.

1. Perfect your wriggle!

Watch David Silva wriggle free from his marker. He uses lots of little touches with both sides of each foot and is constantly changing direction. You must be comfortable using both the inside and outside of each foot if you want to keep the ball away from defenders. Coerver Ball Mastery drills are a great way of improving this skill

2. Make space to pass or shoot!

Maintaining possession is essential to give your team mates time to move into space and to create shooting options. It is important to keep your head up as much as possible whilst maintaining control of the ball. The more you have to focus on the ball the fewer options you will see and the more likely it is that the opposition will steal the ball from you. Practice ball control whilst looking up. A great way of improving this aspect of your game is to move between two cones whilst playing catch with a tennis ball. This drill will force you to keep your head up. It is important to also shield the ball from the defender. It is then possible to use a pull or drag move and spin away from the challenge, once open you can then choose to pass or shoot.

3. Look after the ball!

The ball is your friend, protecting it from defenders and maintaining possession is essential. The Spanish national team has one of the best possession percentages in the world due to the players being confident in tight situations under pressure. They always have their body or a foot between the ball and the defender to act as a shield. There are many great games coming up over the next few weeks, when watching look at how particular players such as Silva, Messi and Ronaldo protect the ball from opponents.

The Coerver Ball Mastery skills are a great way to practice your touch and control under pressure. Develop your practice by playing against an opponent first off by just pressuring and then moving on to try and steal the ball.

As with all skills practicing them in game situations is key to success.

Here are three great 3 tips for sprinting with the ball and using your pace to beat the opposition.

Follow these 3 great tips to help you play like a pro! Playing against a strong opposition you may find that there are no sensible passing options. In such cases it is possible to surge the defenders with a change of pace. Catch your defender wrong footed and you can find yourself in a strong shooting position or able to play the ball to a team mate making an attacking run!

Watch for space

We’re not talking about mazy dribbling but full-pelt sprinting with the ball, just like the Real Madrid star! To pull this off, you need to be totally aware of the space around you. If you’re approaching a defender who’s been left on his own, get ready to burn it!

Sprint it out

This technique is not about having loads of tippy tappy touches like Lionel Messi – it’s about hitting the ball into space and belting after it! Measuring your touch is the key. You’ll need just enough power on the ball to get it past the defender, while giving you enough room to beat him in a sprint! Remember to practice this skill with both your left and right foot. As with all Coerver skills it essential to be able to use both feet. This will make you a threat in any situation!

Use the surge

You can’t fly around the pitch at full speed for the whole game, so it’s important to vary your speed and pick your moment. Carry the ball at one pace towards your marker, then when you spot a moment, it’s time to surge and really turn on the gas!

Run with the ball like Gareth Bale

As with all skills practicing them in game situations is key to success. Try simple shuttle runs dribbling with both feet and alternating speed between each run. This will give you the confidence to beat any defender in any situation you find yourself in on the pitch!

Coerver Coaching Master Class – Air Juggling

Many coaches think that air juggling is a street skill with no real benefit in competitive soccer. However this skill rapidly improves players first touch in addition to helping with the weight of passes. This skill has to be one of the easiest to practice. It require no special equipment, just some space and a ball.

The best place to start with Air Juggling is to simply pick up the ball and drop it to each foot and then catch it again. Once you have mastered this you can take two touches in-between each catch. As you develop you can then continue to increase the number of touches until you no longer have to catch the ball. The trick to reaching new records of Air Juggling is to keep each touch identical so that you know exactly where the ball is going to land. This repetition improves the played first touch allowing them to receive fast or long passes with ease.

The Coerver Coaching juggling progression has six levels. Progress can be made to the next level once the player is able to reach a goal of 100 repitions. To some this number may seem unachievable but with time and practice you will see progress. A good tip is to understand that once you reach, for example, 15 touches, the next progression isn’t 30 reps but 16. Using this approach you will find yourself progressing quickly.

Below is a brief description of the 6 level approach you can apply to develop your juggling skills.

Air Juggling – A Coerver Coaching Master Class

Level 1: Any Touch. Start with the ball in your hands. The test: 4 chances and then add your best two together. That’s your score. Every touch counts, even the unintentional one off of the face or chest. Goal: Reach 100 touches.

Level 1B: Any Touch. The test: take 4 tries. Now this single best of the four is your score. Try to get 100 touches in a row.

Level 1C: Mostly Feet touches. The test: “4 tries, best 2”. Successive touches that are not on the feet don’t count – but don‘t end the turn. Thus “foot, thigh, thigh, foot, foot, foot, thigh, thigh, thigh, foot, foot” is a score of 8. Goal: a score of 100. After this level rather than starting with the ball in your hands drop it and start from the turf.

Level 2: Feet Only. The test: “4 tries, best 2”. Only touches on the feet count, any other touch ends the turn. Goal: a score of 100.

Level 3: Weak Foot Only. The test: “4 tries, best 2”. Only touches on the weaker foot count, any other touch ends the turn. Note: Start to test this every week about 2/3 of the way through the first year just to get working on the off foot. Goal: 100.

Level 4: Progressive Juggling. The test: take 4 tries. The best of the 4 is your score. Progressive Juggling follows this pattern. “right(1), left, left(2), right, right, right(3), left, left, left, left(4), … All touches must be with the feet; any variation in the pattern ends the turn. Goal: 15 (=105 touches).

Level 5: Body Parts. The fourteen parts are: four parts of each foot (instep, inside, outside, and heel), each thigh, top of each shoulder, chest, and head. Players collect as many body parts as possible in any order on a single turn. Each body part only counts once until all 14 are collected, even if the player selects to use that part multiple times. Once all 14 are completed on a turn, the player can begin a 2nd collection on that same turn. Players take as many turns as possible in 2 minutes (+extra time on last turn). Record best turn.

Coaches this type of drill is perfect homework for your players. Remember though if you do set this type of drill for your players to practice in their own time then you must give regular tests to see how different players are progressing. A competitive element can also be introduced within the team with a small prize up for grabs.
