Coaching soccer doesn’t come naturally for us all.

So follow these 10 steps to improve your coaching and lead your team to success!

  1. Develop Communication Skills. How you speak, how you listen and in Coerver Coaching how you Demonstrate are really important.
  2. Never Stop Learning. The best People I have worked with in my career Juergen Klinsmann, Gerard Houllier, Carlos Alberto Parreiera, Sir Geoff Hurst, all World Cup Champions, told me they still regarded themselves as student.
  3. Learn from Mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, that’s okay as long as you learn from them, and don’t repeat.
  4. Keep a Healthy Lifestyle. Every Coach is a model to his/her students; young players will copy you, so set a good example.
  5. Coach with your heart, not only your head. Young Players need care and attention, winning is not everything at this age. So think before you say anything other than encouragement and praise.
  6. Enthusiasm, Encouragement, Energy = Excellence. This is the winning formula to be a good coach.
  7. Enjoy your Work. Anyone who teaches football in my opinion is lucky, so enjoy every moment.
  8. Concentrate on the performance not the game result. When you are a development Coach, your goal is long term success. In the short term you may lose games, but stick to the Coerver Principles of Individual Player Development and long term improvement is likely.
  9. Try and not over Coach. Try and remember be “Simple, Short, and clear in you coaching and when you demonstrate. Young players have usually a short attention span, so use each word carefully.
  10. Plan. Even after 30 Years Coaching I never go on the field without a Practice Plan. Spend time making your practice. Be clear what you want to show and how you are going to show it. Write it down.

Welcome to our new video series on Free kicks, Goal kicks, Corners and today’s topic, Penalties.

Young players from the academy of Cheslea F.C. and Coerver Coaching will show you how you can improve these kicks with essential soccer tips.

You will also get a great drill you can use to master these kicks by yourself, with friends or your team mates.

The adidas MiCoach Smart Ball and Smart Ball app we also help you to improve your game. Today’s topic is penalties and the essential soccer tips you need when you step up to take a PEN.

Firstly you have to practice penalties. Now you can never re-create a game situation, but you can improve your technique. This will help your confidence and help you to put away a penalty when it really maters on game day.

So after your next training session, or if you are with your friends shooting on goal, take five minutes to practice your technique and following these four essential soccer tips.

  1. Before you strike the ball, decide where you are going to put it. Make up your mind and stick to it. Have confidence in your decision. If you change your mind, especially during your run up, you could miss it.
  2. Don’t look at the keeper, keep your eyes on the ball. Keepers will try to distract you. Keep focused, make up your mind and score.
  3. Relax, breathe in slowly. Compose yourself, don’t rush. Take the PEN when you are ready and be confident.
  4. Perfect pens soccer tips4. Aim for the corners of goal. You are most likely to score if you hit the ball with power and accuracy in the corners of the goal. It’s the hardest place for keepers to get to. Practice the technique of hitting the ball with power and accuracy into the corners and remember these four essential steps, and you will be more likely to score from the PEN spot. Make sure you check out our next video for some awesome drills to improve your penalty kicks.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of the series!

After his man of the match performance in the UEFA Champion’s League on Wednesday, we are all looking forward to Messi skills in El Clásico. Where he reigns as the top scorer ever.

Messi is the perfect player we can all learn from. We’re going to break down Messi’s five essential qualities according to the COERVER® CODE that you can apply to your game.

Messi’s Approach

  1. SKILLS.
    1. Messi skills effect confidence and creativity.
    2. Confidence: The Foundation of Messi’s game is supreme ball mastery. Once a player masters the ball their confidence can grow. Ball Mastery, as Messi shows each week, is essential for; 1 v 1, running with the ball, as well as shooting and first touch receiving.
    3. Creativity: Player’s who are creative do unexpected things in a game, like Messi skills. They can make the difference at crucial deciding moments in the game. Without ball mastery, it is difficult to lead creatively.
  2. SPEED.
    1. For this skill to be effective in a game, players need to “marry” skill with speed. Each week Messi demonstrates this with his ability to change pace and direction with the ball.
  3. SENSE.
    1. This mean’s making the right decision at the right time, in the right place. This can only come from focus and concentration as well as lifelong practice. Being able to read the field intuitively as he does, also requires player’s taking responsibility in the game. All of which are displayed weekly by Messi.
  4. STRENGTH.
    1. This mean’s a high level of physical fitness.
    2. Which requires dedication and hard work. Messi is an example of a player consistently performing well due to his dedication to hard work in training and diet. He is one player that plays in every minute, early in every game.
  5. SPIRIT
    1. Means a winning combination of Respect, Sportsmanship and Courage. Winning & losing graciously. Always trying your best. Messi’s career and behaviour is a model of these qualities.
    2. No one can play like Messi, he is unique and one of a kind. But you can definitely learn from him and apply his attributes to how you approach your game.

Messi skills have been the key factor in many of Barcelona’s victories this season. Now we all can’t do perfect Messi Skills but he can certainly inspire us all to practice harder and improve.

Coerver Coaching Education:

The NEW Coerver® Coaching Play like the Stars Soccer Coaching Education course got off to a great start in Scotland with the inaugural course taking place on Saturday 7th March 2015 at the Hearts FC Football Academy in Edinburgh.

soccer coaching tips Scotland 1

The course was attended by 60 coaches from across the country, with 40 professional academy coaches and 20 grassroots coaches. The Course was delivered by Coerver® Scotland and Portugal Director Gordon Craig with focus on the Coerver® Coaching approach to 1v1, a topic in which we have a 30 year history. The full day course, through theory and practical sessions, gave coaches an understanding of how to develop 1v1 skills from mastery to game effective use in addition to many useful soccer coaching tips.

Gordon Craig said “1v1 always seems to be a popular topic that Coerver® work on with professional clubs, in the last year Coerver® has delivered courses on this topic at Werder Bremen in Germany and also for national federations such as Czech and Northern Irish FA and now with Hearts FC”.

“We were really pleased to bring this course to Scotland and have such a high attendance of coaches from all levels of the game. We feel that developing game effective 1v1 players can have a big influence on the game in Scotland, developing players who can protect the ball, run with the ball and create goal chances using 1v1 can really help develop players who can make the difference in the game”

“Following the success of the inaugural course, we look forward to rolling the course out across the country over the coming months”.

Magic Muller’s Amazing Soccer Skills

FC Bayern München are the away team tonight in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 but they are ready for battle. Bayern came back from one goal down in the Bundesliga last weekend, with two goals from Thomas Müller. The Bayern team have some of the world’s greatest talents, but today we are going to look at some of Müller’s key qualities and amazing soccer skills!

Number one on the list, he scores goals! Important goals. He’s often in the right time, at the right place, and his first time finishing is excellent in the box.

The second amazing quality that all coaches and players can learn from Müller, is his fighting spirit. He never gives up, constantly working hard for his team in and out of possession. He is a tremendous competitor with great mental strength.

The third quality we are going to talk about, might surprise you. It’s his directness. Müller doesn’t hesitate. He does everything quickly. When he sees space, he attacks it. He is very efficient with his touches on the ball. He won’t take two touches of the ball, if only one is needed. He is constantly thinking about the quickest way to attack his opponents and which of his many soccer skills to use. The video below does a great job of showing how you can approach your game like his. Whether you are an amateur player or coach, you can use this video to improve your attacking and directness approach on goal.

Four things you need to know:

  •  If you use a soccer skill to beat your opponent, accelerate away to create space to shoot, pass, or run with the ball.
  •  Use this drill to work on your small group play. 2v2, 3v3 and up to 4v4. This will help your team improve their passing, 1v1, attacking and defending. It will also help you create more goal chances.
  • As soon as you score or lose the ball, you become the defender. Don’t switch off! It’s time to win the ball back for your team. This is where your fighting spirit comes into play, just like Müller’s.

Be sure to join us next week during Champion’s League, as we take a look at the one and only Leo Messi’s skills.

At the age of 27, four-time winner, and placing either first or second over the last seven years, Messi is once again in the final three for the Ballon d’Or. Recently breaking the La Liga goal scoring record, and current holder of the Champions League goal scoring record, Messi is undoubtedly one of the greatest players ever. But what are his soccer skills that set him apart from the competition?

Today in partnership with Coerver Coaching, we will highlight two of Messi’s soccer skills; Change of Direction and Dynamic Speed.

There are four key ways Messi Changes Direction with the ball.

1. Messi uses change of direction moves like the “U-turn” & “Drag Back” to shield the ball from defenders. Check out this video so you can learn and test your own U-turn and drag back moves.

Make sure you touch the ball with your toe, pivot and change direction with a high knee movement.

  • How to do the “Drag back

Stop the ball with the sole of your foot, drag it back, change the angle of your hips and push the ball out using the inside of your foot.

  • The Zig Zag Soccer Skills Test

Set up this simple drill with your friends or by yourself. Use two different change of direction moves between each cone. When you have mastered it with your good foot, start practicing on your weaker foot, by starting the drill at the other end!!!

2. As Messi is usually double or even triple marked by defenders, he sometimes uses double or triple change of direction moves to protect the ball and get out of trouble. This is one of the reasons he is so amazing! Skilled players have a great chance of beating or protecting the ball against one opponent. Messi can keep the ball or beat two or three opponents regularly.

3. Messi is brilliant at combining change of direction moves to create a space for the quick one two pass with a team mate or giving him time to make the killer pass. The killer pass is a pass that creates a goal chance.

4. Finally he uses change of direction moves to create a shot. Messi’s shot is usually with his left foot and he places the ball in the back of the net with a firm passing like technique. This is great news for all of us, as we can all learn that composure, accuracy and placement scores goals. With practice we can all improve these qualities in our game.

Dynamic speed

Of course Messi is blistering fast, particularly over the first five yards. He is lightening quick, something that he has worked incredibly hard on in practice. But there is one thing that we can all incorporate into our own game about Messi’s game, and that’s speed!

Think about the way that he stops & starts when he is dribbling the ball. He changes pace, either from slow to fast, or fast to slow. This is a nightmare for defenders as they do not know when to make the tackle. The defender does not know how you are going to control your speed and can’t anticipate your soccer skills. This may give you more time and more space with the ball crafting a pass, dribble or shot.

Check out the step kick here.

A great way to stop and start your speed, especially on the wings and across the goal, just like Messi!

To develop the explosive power that you need to get to every ball, be sure to figure in the extra training that is needed, in addition to the tips above.

Check out this training plan on game breaking speed.

TIPS

Tip 4:  Don’t give your players too much information. Keep it concise and try to give only a few key points in each drill. Use a plater from the group when demonstrating drills. This will give you the opportunity to explain and show how it should be performed.

Tip 5:  Don’t commentate during the drill. You will only confuse you players and over complicate the situation. Collect you thoughts and comments and feedback to the group at the end of the session or during a break. This will give the players the opportunity to correct their mistakes next time.

In part 1 of this new soccer video series on Youth Soccer Coaching you get 5 essential tips to help improve your soccer practices.

Use these tips for every one of your soccer drills and games.

  • Tip 1: Don’t stop the soccer practice too early. Your players wont get the repetition they need to improve their soccer skills. Also, as a soccer coach you will not get enough time to analyse how your players are doing and help them improve.
  • Tip 2: Don’t stop your soccer practice too often. It’s boring for your players!! This breaks their focus and doesn’t give them the practice time they need to improve.
  • Tip 3: Don’t teach too many topics in your soccer practice. Make sure you have a soccer practice plan. Don’t be afraid to take it out with you on the field.

Watch out next week for part 2 of this Youth Soccer Coaching series.
