Coerver Coaching Master Class – Grass to Grass / Fake Pass

The Fake Pass is one of the easiest ways of creating essential time and space to create an opening or chance on target. You may use this skill already without even thinking and should feel natural with either foot. This skill has to be one of the easiest to practice. It require no special equipment, just some space and a ball.

This move can be combined with many other Coerver Ball Mastery Skills to make you a better player! Below Jason Lancsar, Coerver Coaching Asia Pacific Director takes you through the simple steps to perfecting this move. Remember to practice with both feet.

Tips to remember when practicing this move are:

  •  Keep the ball close, not far out in front of you to prevent defenders from stealing the ball.
  •  As you become more confident, increase speed of the move and try linking several fakes together.
  •  Try using opposite foot to ensure confidence in using both feet.

Grass 2 Grass

  • Step 1: Start with the ball inside of foot ensure standing leg knee bent for good balance. Remember to shield the ball from defenders using your body or opposite leg.
  • Step 2: With same foot roll foot over ball slightly touching the ball first with instep and the with the sole of the foot in one smooth motion
  • Step 3: Ball should now be on the outside of the foot. At this stage in the move the ball is most likely to be stolen by a defender so keep this step as fast as possible to fool the defender.
  • Step 4: Go back same way reversing the process.
  • Step 5: Ball should finish where you started, protected by your body.

Many professional use this move to create space or a shooting opportunity. Players like Messi, Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic often use several fake passes within the box to force defenders into blocking shots. This opens up the limited space within the box and makes hitting the target far easier for strikers.

This move can be incorporated into warm up drills and should be encouraged where possible in other drills.

Here are three great 3 tips for keeping the ball from the opposition like Spanish international and Manchester City midfielder David Silva.

Follow these 3 great tips to help you play like a pro! Playing against a strong opposition you may find that there are no sensible passing options. In these situations defenders will pressure the ball so it is vital to stay in possession to allow team mates to find space and passing options. David Silva is one of the best players at this and often makes chances using the following techniques.

1. Perfect your wriggle!

Watch David Silva wriggle free from his marker. He uses lots of little touches with both sides of each foot and is constantly changing direction. You must be comfortable using both the inside and outside of each foot if you want to keep the ball away from defenders. Coerver Ball Mastery drills are a great way of improving this skill

2. Make space to pass or shoot!

Maintaining possession is essential to give your team mates time to move into space and to create shooting options. It is important to keep your head up as much as possible whilst maintaining control of the ball. The more you have to focus on the ball the fewer options you will see and the more likely it is that the opposition will steal the ball from you. Practice ball control whilst looking up. A great way of improving this aspect of your game is to move between two cones whilst playing catch with a tennis ball. This drill will force you to keep your head up. It is important to also shield the ball from the defender. It is then possible to use a pull or drag move and spin away from the challenge, once open you can then choose to pass or shoot.

3. Look after the ball!

The ball is your friend, protecting it from defenders and maintaining possession is essential. The Spanish national team has one of the best possession percentages in the world due to the players being confident in tight situations under pressure. They always have their body or a foot between the ball and the defender to act as a shield. There are many great games coming up over the next few weeks, when watching look at how particular players such as Silva, Messi and Ronaldo protect the ball from opponents.

The Coerver Ball Mastery skills are a great way to practice your touch and control under pressure. Develop your practice by playing against an opponent first off by just pressuring and then moving on to try and steal the ball.

As with all skills practicing them in game situations is key to success.

The skill of the week comes this week from arguably the greatest player ever to grace the world of soccer. 4 time consecutive winner of the Ballon d’Or, Barcelona striker Linoel Messi

This great Coerver move can be used to beat your opponent, create space to pass, shoot or run with the ball. It was this very move that gave Messi the space he needed. To find the corner of the goal in the Champions League Final in 2011 against Manchester United.

3 Essential steps to beat your defender one-on-one

Plan your next move

Whats the point of winning your one-on-one battle if you don’t know what to do next? Messi never gets caught out, he’s always planning his next pass, shot or change of direction. So you need to think like this too if you want to improve your game!

 Master your ball control

Lionel Messi is the world’s best at beating opponents in one-on-one situations. Watch how close the ball is to his feet whenever he runs at defenders. So this is the kind of ace control you need to become a one-on-one trickster like Messi!

Skate past your man

Leo’s trademark trick for beating defenders is the sidestep. He uses it to cut in from the left and open up the whole pitch. Step to one side quickly as the defender approaches, then use your other foot to knock the ball into space and sprint away!

Andres Iniesta is the complete player.

Spain’s magician can do everything. Whether it’s dribbling, passing or finishing, he executes each act with effortless elegance and devastating accuracy.

The man from La Mancha comes alive with the ball at his feet. A master evader capable of finding an improbable escape route when cornered by a pack of defenders.

Alfred Galustian, co-founder of Coerver Coaching, has created a set of five drills based on Iniesta’s game that are designed to help you emulate Spain’s master craftsman.

With the click of a button you can download each exercise and transform your game. So what are you waiting for?

Drill One

Find yourself getting caught in possession? Not after this dribbling drill. Speed up your thought process and glide away from opponents a la Iniesta by practising this bit of skill

Drill Two

Whether your team-mate gives you a perfectly weighted pass or a shovel-footed shank, you’ll be able to bring the ball under your spell and keep possession by getting this down.

Drill Three

Use this exercise to marry both of your feet to the ball. No more reliance upon one foot: soon your control will be more akin to Spain’s master craftsman than a leaden-footed donkey

Drill Four

Barcelona’s creator-in-chief can control, turn and pass all in one fluid movement. Introduce this drill to your training sessions and you’ll soon find that you can do just the same

Drill Five

Find yourself panicking under pressure in a game situation? Tighten up your technique and carry the ball with composure, courtesy of this ball mastery exercise
